Ministry of Public Works Reaffirms Its Commitment to Building a Resilient Monrovia—Signs a Road Maintenance Contract to Rehabilitate All Roads Within the City Limits
As part of efforts to ensuring that Monrovia regains its resilience by having roads that reflect the true aesthetics of a city, the Ministry of Public Works has signed a Road Maintenance Contract with BK Enterprise, a Liberian owned company, to rehabilitate all roads including pedestrian walkways throughout the city of Monrovia.
The project which is set to begin upon the coming into force of this contract shall cover patching of potholes, restoration of critical sessions, asphalt overlay, and the reconditioning of pedestrian walkways. While the project aims to enhance pliability within Monrovia City, it also recognizes the significance of the free movement of pedestrians as a way of avoiding their usage of the main asphalt road, while at the same time ensuring safety.
It is rather important to note that the project is being financed by the Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP), a World Bank sponsored project lodged at the Ministry of Public Works. In an opening remark the Project Manager Gabriel Flabboe emphasized the importance of a resilient city, reinforcing LURP's commitment to supporting any endeavor of the Ministry that is geared towards enhancing the aesthetics of Monrovia. "As we have done on several fronts, the LURP shall continue to support the Ministry to ensure its goals are met and that the integrity of the city is restored", Mr. Flabboe stressed.
Also speaking at the signing ceremony the Chief Executive Officer of BK Enterprise, Boakai Kollie, thanked Minister Roland Layfette Giddings and the Management Team at the Ministry for prioritizing Liberian companies and entrusting them with a significant portion of their country's development. Mr. Kollie assured the Ministry that his company sees this opportunity beyond a business venture, but a call to handling a duty that benefits Liberia. "We do not take this opportunity lightly, because how we handle this task will reflect the love we have for our country as well as the desire to see it developed", he remarked.
Concluding the remarks, Minister Giddings thanked the Bank for financing the Ministry's initiatives through the Liberia Urban Resilience Project. He highlighted the importance of empowering Liberian companies that have a demonstrated record of competence, trust, and integrity. Minister Giddings, however, cautioned that despite his administration's goal to empower Liberian companies and make them competitive to their foreign counterparts, he will also not relent to terminate any contract that is not living up to its terms and conditions. "While we have taken a bold step to bring Liberian companies to the limelight, we will demand from them the best quality work and nothing less!", the Minister said.
