Status Update on the Grand Bassa University Bridge Construction Project

Grand Bassa County, May 26, 2025:  In response to recent media reports suggesting that the construction of the Grand Bassa University Bridge has been abandoned, the Ministry of Public Works wishes to clarify the current status of the project and correct the public narrative.

Contrary to claims that the contractor has halted work and made no effort to resume construction, we affirm that significant progress has been made. The contractor has successfully completed the construction of both bridge abutments, which form the foundational support structures for the bridge.

At present, the contractor is engaged in the backfilling of the abutments with rocks. This essential process is being carried out to reinforce the structures and protect them from environmental factors over time.

Additionally, the elevation of both abutments by three (3) feet was a deliberate engineering decision, based on hydrologic assessments of the water table during the peak of the rainy season. This adjustment ensures long-term structural resilience and flood resistance.

The next phase of the project involves the installation of the Bailey bridge components. These parts are currently being finalized by the manufacturer and are scheduled for delivery and installation no later than August of this year.

To align with the elevated height of the abutments, the contractor will also raise the approach road to ensure a smooth and accessible passage once the bridge is completed.

Toward this end, the Ministry hereby assures the public and stakeholders that the project remains active and on course, and all efforts are being made to meet the timeline and quality expectations. We appreciate your continued patience and support, which are largely influenced by your sense of urgency to see the successful completion of this most anticipated project.
